Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers & Steel Fabrications

Saxa Vord, Shetland Islands

Brody Forbes were engaged to design, fabricate and install a steel radome support structure, together with associated civil works.  They also designed, fabricated and installed a bespoke steel “windbreak” structure, in which a radome could be built in high wind conditions thus reducing the risk to the programme.

This was an especially challenging project; given the significant adverse weather conditions, especially high winds.  RRH Saxa Vord holds the unofficial British record for highest wind speed (1962) at 177 mph and the highest wind speeds experienced during these works was 132mph.

Brody Forbes’ site team were instrumental in ensuring that the RAF and the MOD were able to meet their target date for the restoration of the Air Defence Radar Capability at Remote Radar Head Saxa Vord.

Brody Forbes Ltd received a commendation from the Royal Air Force’s Air Chief Marshal, Sir Stephen Hillier, for their outstanding work to ensure that the RAF recovered a vital air defence radar capability at RRH Saxa Vord in the Shetland Islands.  Sir Stephen Hillier particularly praised the “exceptional commitment” of the Brody Forbes team.  Indeed, this project was mentioned in the Queens’ Birthday Honours List 2018 with a certificate of recognition issued to Brody Forbes.
